Improving Self Esteem Through Improving Self-Leadership
Self esteem is the mental attitude of an individual toward his or her own self worth. Self-worth is more than just a sense of being worthy of something. It is also a belief in one’s ability and potential to succeed in specific areas of life. The concept of self worth has to do not only with one’s personal worth but also the value others place on him or her. Self esteem encompasses various psychological states, including feelings of despair, triumph, pride, shame, and triumph, all of which have an effect on how an individual relates to and behaves towards himself or herself.
Some of the most common psychological disorders that lead to high self esteem include chronic pain, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, panic disorder, teenage bulimia, and drug abuse. While these problems are treatable, individuals who suffer from any of these conditions are still likely to have a poor self esteem. One of the major causes of this disorder is the view that others see undesirable behaviors and qualities in them, which impedes their development into a healthy and successful adult.
Low self-esteem can affect practically every area of an individual’s life. It manifests itself in relationships in the form of low self-confidence, depressed self-image, lack of commitment, insecurity, poor communication, and dysfunctional relationships. When the self esteem of an individual is low, they are likely to experience feelings of depression, loneliness, hopelessness, and helplessness. Individuals who suffer from high self-esteem also feel that they are confident, reliable, responsible, and able to handle almost any life situation.
Individuals who have a healthy self esteem are self confident and comfortable with their sexuality. They also think less about sex. Individuals with high self esteem have healthy body image, have high self-respect, do not smoke, eat too much junk food, and do not have unrealistic expectations about themselves and others. These individuals also have positive social relationships, participate in wellness and fitness activities, and are not depressed or anxious. On the other hand, those with low self esteem tend to be excessively self critical and have negative self-image.
The first step to improving your self esteem is to identify and eliminate limiting beliefs and negative self talk. Your self talk consists of the beliefs, omitting or delegating responsibilities and social obligations that you might have had in the past, or the way you perceive yourself. For example, if you think that you don’t deserve certain things because you were a child of a single parent, start limiting your self talk that way. Likewise, if you believe that you are worthless or ugly because of your weight, then begin to challenge those thoughts by participating in exercises, joining clubs and organizations for obese people, eating healthier foods, and talking to people about your self-image.
Once you are aware of the messages you are sending to yourself through messages in your self talk, the next step in improving self esteem is to find ways to replace the negative self talk with positive messages. It is important to practice positive self talk by repeating statements like “I am a valued and special person,” and “I am an important person with a great deal to offer.” You can also try rephrasing the positive statement as something more positive, such as “I am confident and intelligent.” Once you have repeated this message to yourself a number of times, it will become habitual, and you will be more likely to accept the opinions and judgments of other people in a positive light.
The final step in improving self esteem is to work on creating positive relationships with others and making good choices. When you work on building high self-esteem, you increase your self-confidence, which will help you to become a more effective team player, negotiate more effectively, handle conflict and frustration, make better decisions, learn more quickly, and be a better friend to yourself and to those around you. In addition to having high self- esteem, the confidence that comes from working on improving your self esteem also helps you to feel good about being a good leader. When you lead others and yourself with high self esteem, you will be able to lead them successfully because your actions show you that you have the confidence to do so.
While many people spend countless hours daily practicing self-talk, few take the time to practice self-leadership. When you build self-confidence and self- esteem through self-leadership activities, you will find that the tasks you are doing will go much more smoothly and you will be more effective at accomplishing them. You will also find that your productivity will increase. Building self- esteem is a lifelong process, but it doesn’t have to be a long, painful one. By following the above steps, you will be well on your way to improving self esteem and self-leadership.
